Hijab fashion has graced the New York Fashion Week runway many times before, but this year was extra special.
Indonesian designer Anniesa Hasibuan has become the first designer to ever showcase an entire collection at the NYFW with every look worn with a hijab.
With 48 colorful, chic and conservative looks, Hasibuan seemed to tell the world that modest fashion deserves a place on prestigious international runways.
According to Elle, Hasibuan is the first Indonesian to participate at an official NYFW venue show. Her designs were part of The Shows, which features haute couture, alongside the biggest names in the scene, like Vera Wang, Desigual and Jeremy Scott.
Hasibaun nailed the modern-traditional mashup, adding an edgy twist to her Indonesian-inspired garments. Here’s a closer look at how Hasibaun wowed the audience and earned a standing ovation:

Hasibuan only made her professional debut last year, but she’s already made it to many global shows, including the Istanbul and London Fashion weeks.
She is one of many Muslims who have been working to neutralize the bias against Muslims in the West, by giving a new gloss to the hijab, whose wearers have been repeatedly targeted by hate-crimes.
